We also know what it's like to have our expectations far exceed reality in a product or service that didn't live up to the hype of advertising. Our History with Products for Outdoorsmen.
Josh and Mike grew up in the 1980's and 1990's where the products that were new weren't all that different than the used items we got from family and thrift stores. All winter clothing was big and thick to allow for layering and boots were heavy with dense materials. Coon hunting still had a few old lanterns in the truck and nobody had a tracking system. Fishing was just starting to see the first graphite rods. We're always hearing how "they don't make things like they used to" when comparing items today to those yesterday. We here at the Crockett Coonhound cannot disagree more with this statement about the old stuff being better than the new stuff. We know there are cheaper made things today but if you want a great product made for outdoor enthusiast today, then you can certainly find what you're looking for at several price points!
Our Problem
The main problem with manufacturing today is that many of the items we're looking for are made overseas where they crank out as many cheap products as they can with a warranty from the store who sells it. The flip side to this problem is that the good stuff is usually also made overseas with no warranty but is very expensive. We try to see what products are out there and compare features we find important to us.
Our Product Reviews
The Cooner team loves trying out products to see who they are for. Each one of us is different and we choose different things to like. In order to get to the ranking on our product recommendations then that product or service better be very good. We don't accept bribes or get told what we can say about our products so when we recommend something then you can trust it is a good one. We just want every outdoor enthusiast to be prepared.
Our Featured Product Highlights
We use a list of criteria to judge a product or service and weigh the feature set the item brings to the table against the ability the items was engineered for. Most products are created to answer a problem and we try to test how well the item removes the obstacles it was designed to remove!
Intended Use!
We start most reviews by establishing how well the product matches its intended use case.
Intentionality is not always obvious at first glance. Manufacturer's cut corners and design for production over ingenuity so their final copies may not complete task as well as another product. We reward those who go for a complete solution!
Functional Design!
If a product is not functional then we cannot recommend it!
Functionality and form is the way we interface with a product. We can call it ergonomics technically but we all know that wonderful feeling we get when we use a quality item that fits us well.
Ability to complete task!
Most reviewers place cost vs value as the final determining factor but we want the final measurement to be how well the product can do its job.
Let's face it. It is very hard to estimate the true value of something based on cost alone. We usually compare several prices to see if an item is priced effectively but we don't get a chance to see how well a product works before buying it. This is where a good review can help!
